Two Arkansas teenagers are run over by a train. The state medical examiner rules they smoked themselves into "a marijuana-induced stupor" before lying down, side by side on the tracks. He rules the deaths accidental. Case closed. Except that when the parents of one get the bodies exhumed, new autopsies point to murder. That launches the mom of one of the boys on a journey that will lead her into a dark world of drugs and political corruption. In 2001, after this book's release, a U.S. court of appeals wrote "The record in this case reads like a John Grisham novel." Unfortunately, this story is not fiction.

The Boys on the Tracks Death denial and a mother crusade to bring her son killers to justice eBook Mara Leveritt

I read this book years ago when it first came out. I read it again recently after Billy Jack Haynes came forward with new information about the case. I lived in Arkansas from 1988 to 2005 and I remember this being local news during those early years. This is an important book, about and important cover-up. I hope and pray all the families who have been affected by these crimes and cover-ups will get justice someday. Our nation needs to know about this corruption and we need to clean it up. Once and for all. So much of the nonsense I see in the media everyday is meaningless. Why aren't they talking about this? Read this book and you will understand why they don't. They're afraid you will learn the truth.

The Boys on the Tracks Death denial and a mother crusade to bring her son killers to justice eBook Mara Leveritt Reviews

Very interesting read. Great exposure of corrupt politicians & why the war on drugs is failing. Our Book Club in Hot Springs Village was lucky to have the mother of Kevin Ives attend our discussion. Mara had her read each chapter as it was completed; very factual & lots of footnotes! Sad that two 17 year olds were in the wrong place at the wrong time & payed with their lives. Their killers will probably never be brought to justice until they face their judgement day.
We live in Arkansas now and remember some of the story. In my opinion, this was an insight to what was going on with the government system looking out for its own.
This is an excellent book for everyone raising kids in today's society, everyone interested in the inner workings of law enforcement, and everyone interested in the "War On Drugs".
Fiction writers have it easy, they can limit their cast of characters. In real life, Mara Leveritt, Gary Webb, Terry Reed, and the others who have explored the CIA/cocaine connection found it's not so easy. The cast of characters is immense, many of their names are confusing, but real life is like that. (As you read the various authors, many of the same characters do keep popping up!)
I wanted to read "Boys on the Tracks" because I was flying my personal plane in and out of Mena during the same time period that Barry Seal and the CIA were importing drugs. I wanted to see whether Ms Leveritt's book rang true. It does. I have met a few of the characters and know of others. The facts in this book accurately reflect what I have personally observed.
Unlike "The Secret Life of Bill Clinton" by Ambrose Evans-Pritchard, this is not an anti- Clinton book. Those who want to bash Willie will have to look elsewhere. But after looking elsewhere, when you need independent verification of what is fact versus what is only rumor, I hope you will read this book.
The Boys on the tracks was one of the most fascinating books I have ever read. However, it left me infuriated because of the fact of all the cover-ups and of all the secrecy behind the murders. I look for some very good crime fighter, who loves to investigate unsolved crimes to read this book and start their own investigation and may the chips fall where they may, even if it goes to the white house.
I grew up down the block from Kevin's house, he was three years older than me. I remember riding the bus with him. He was always laughing and care free. The shocking turn of events and the corruption of justice that followed is unbelievable! Hollywood could never have produced a story as shocking as this, yet this happened in real life, right here in the slow southern town that I still call home. It seems that justice will have to wait, but at some point the perpetrators will have to answer for their misdeeds!
I learned of this book while listening to a true crime podcast and was fascinated by the story. I ordered the book immediately and devoured it over the course of about 2 weeks. Here are my thoughts

- This is a large book (300+ pages), but don't let that deter you. It is EXCELLENTLY written and sucks you in immediately. I would liken this to an Investigation Discovery show that you are reading instead of watching on television.

- Even though the book is 300 pages, the type font is pretty small. If I had to guess I would say it is close to 10-point font if you were typing on Word. It was noticeably small when I started reading, but it may be necessary as large print would make this a 400+ book easily. I will say, after about 50 pages or so I stopped noticing it and adjusted.

- The Author does a great job of breaking up the flow in manageable sections of 3-4 page chunks. I really, really like that style (it's similar to the way Tom Clancy wrote his earlier books) as it allows me to advance in small increments rather than slogging through 40 page chapters.

- The actual story is simply incredible. I wouldn't believe it if it wasn't so well documented and sourced. It unveils (only partially because the conspiracy is still being perpetrated to this day) the sinister roles played by corrupt government officials that go all the way to the top - the Clinton family.

- The Clinton role is handled very well, it is not a political hit piece. It simply lays out, in matter-of-fact tone, what historically happened in Arkansas during the rise to power of Bill and Hillary Clinton and how it ties in to the murder of these two boys on a warm August night. The book makes clear that the Clinton's are unquestionably involved, but to what level remains a murky mystery, joining others such as Whitewater, Vince Foster's death, and the sexual assaults
and intimidation campaigns associated with the Clintons.

- The pain of the families is very raw. There were times I had to take a break from reading this as I could not imagine what the families are going through, and have been through, over the past twenty years. The facts are set forth expertly, but the author also captures and articulates the emotional toll this has taken on the mothers and fathers.

Overall I would HIGHLY recommend this book. It is a fascinating, and heartbreaking, look at a horrendous cover-up perpetrated by corrupt elected officials from the bottom to the top of the chain of power. If this can happen is small-town Arkansas, it can absolutely happen where you live. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did!
