THIS AUTHOR EUGENE BROOKS TOLD THE STORY OF HIS LIFE AND HIS JOURNEY BEING A BI RACIAL MAN IN AMERICA. HIS STORY IS A TRIUMPH AND A WONDERFUL ADDITION TO THE LITERARY WORLD. I AM A MOTHER OF A MIXED RACE CHILD WHO IS HALF BLACK AND HALF WHITE AND I TRULY CONNECTED WITH THIS STORY. I KNOW THAT HIS SUCCESS IS IMMINENT AND I GIVE HIM A STELLAR REVIEW ON HIS FIRST BOOK.
I was very interested in bi-racial people and wanted to gain some insight into their way of life and their struggles in to gaining acceptance. After reading "Half Black Half White - Finding Me and My Place in America" it gave me a different view of people that are of mixed race. His internal conflict and they way he overcame his addictions is remarkable. Its a good read and a must read for all. I would recommend this book to everybody who wants to understand the thinking of people like Barack Obama, Tiger Woods and other famous mulattos.
Eugene Brooks' "Half Black Half White - Finding Me and My Place in America" is a bold, intense and inspiring work that is a must read for all races. This story of a bi-racial man's struggle for acceptance and the demons he faced and overcame is an example of how anyone with faith and determination can obtain success. He just happens to be bi-racial, however, this book will help, inform and even entertain anyone that likes a great autobiography. Not many Black men would actually expose their lives for the world to see, but Brooks produced a brave and wonderful work that shows weakness, strength, perseverance and achievement!
More and more people in America are like Eugene Brooks - of a mixed racial heritage - not Black, not White not Asian, not Hispanic/Latino, not Native-American but a combination of many. As Eugene Brooks shows, people with such a mixed heritage live surprisingly difficult lives in America. Not only are they denigrated by majority group members for not being "pure" but they are often ostracized by members of the minority groups that show up in their skin color, hair texture and body shapes. Other minority group members often reject them for not being "[Black] or [Latino] enough!" So it's a lose/lose proposition. Eugene Brooks writes in an honest and soul-baring way about being "half black/half white" and makes it clear that it was only when he chose to love and accept himself that he could find his true voice and place in America. This is a difficult book to read because Eugene exposes the fact that his tough outer shell was hiding a softer under-belly. And, it is tough because the truth he tells will be difficult for both majority- and minority-group members to hear. But, since I am writing this review on January 18th, 2010, the day we celebrate ML King's birthday, I must point out that in a county where the "minorities" are fast becoming the "majority" in terms of absolute numbers, we will all have to reckon with the truth that Dr. King understood when he talked about "the dream." Eugene Brooks has a dream too - that one day - people of mixed race in America will be understood and accepted.
